Anyone fancy a road trip?
Life is a journey, not a destination.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Holla friends and bloggers! It’s so great to be baaaack!
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful few days over the weekend! As for us, we took a few extra days to enjoy the Canadian holiday that just passed and celebrated with the first road trip of the summer season.
We love to road trip!
Ah, open space, open roads, and open minds.
Road trips are not for everyone, and I know a few people who simply don’t enjoy time cooped up in a car for hours on end. With that, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite ‘more’ ways to make road travel (just a little) ‘less’ stressful, and maybe (just a little) more enjoyable.
Of course, if you are a lover of the open road like we are, I’d love to hear your tips!
Here are a few of our faves…
Eat breakfast. Eat it before you go, or pack it and take it with you.
Just as you wouldn’t set off for the highway without a full tank of gas, its important to start the trip with a good full tummy!
So whether it’s a bowl of oatmeal, a piece of toast, or a yummy green smoothie (my next post), enjoy it before you head off.
Or, simply throw your smoothie into a clean mason jar and you are good to go for whenever you do get hungry!
The only journey is the one within.
~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Pack plenty of food. The key to a good time is always good food, and the car is no exception!
Easy to eat and clean up healthy snacks are best – and are always appreciated as well!
Our faves are lots of raw veggies, PB&J sandwiches, bagels, jujubes, and easy fruits like apples and oranges.
Nothing feels as good as being prepared, and I love pulling the good stuff out of the bag and smiling while they chow down π
Take lots of fresh water. Staying well hydrated anytime is key, and especially on the road (even if it does mean more annoying pee breaks).
Keeping hydrated ensures you arrive at your destination fresh and ready, instead of dry and wilted.
Water helps with alertness too (for the driver). So pack lots of the cold stuff just to be safe, and pee breaks are always a nice excuse to hit another view-point!
When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.
~ Benjamin Franklin
Cover your bases. Before leaving for the road, make sure you’ve got enough supplies to keep everyone happy….toilet paper, paper towel, tea towels for extra spills, plastic bags, hand sanitizer, gravol, and pillows & blankets for those who might sleep in the back…..or the front….always me on the way home!
Remember to love the driver. I made a rule years ago to honor the driver that got me somewhere. It’s super corny, but I know my driving hubby likes a little of that love, and I like to give it.
The open road can be harsh, and driving is stressful. I try to remember the driver, to thank them, and to take care of them. So whether it’s a little neck massage, an arm scratch, a well-timed Altoid, or even just a genuine ‘thank you’ – a little goes a long way, even if it is just a little gesture.

I wonder if she is practicing mindful breathing?
Take the opportunity to breathe (or not). Anyone tried mindful breathing on the road? It’s a great time to focus on breath and calm the self for the long road ahead. Just a few deep breaths to start the trip and you might relax (just a little) more.
Now wouldn’t that be swell?
Smile, breathe and go slowly.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Get ready to be inspired. My favorite part of the open road is the possibility ahead, especially at the start of a trip!
With all the promise of a few days away, comes an unknown that brings us joy and maybe (just a little) hope. Hope that we’ll see and do things that will bring us joy.
Hope in the memories we’ll make and the sights that we’ll see. Notebooks, cameras, books and music. Anything to inspire and delight!
The world is ours to see.
Strong and content I travel the open road.
~ Walt Whitman
With this view, I am sure you can imagine we didn’t leave much, and arriving there was pretty sweet indeed.
We had a great time with old friends, and it was surely worth the drive.
The meals weren’t half bad either, as you can see from these shots of the wonderfully bustling farmer’s market π
An inspired vacation salad..
Are you a fan of travel or road trips?
- What are your favorite travel snacks?
In my next post I’ll be sharing with you my latest green smoothie (pictured here today), and I am so thrilled to have heard from those of you who had success with some of the recent IPOM recipes!
Thank you for your wonderful comments, support, and feedback – I always love to hear from you π
Wishing you all a super wonderful week!
Yours in Less,
Hello lovely Shira! Welcome back to blog world. Missed ya’!
Very hard to live in New South Wales, indeed anywhere in Australia and not be a fan of road trips. Such a vast country (just like Canada!) LM is a very good road tripper and often takes me to interesting places. I love it.
It always fascinates me, this North American custom of PB&J sammies… π
Hello Miss Syders!! We adore road trips (and having a comfy car helps)….and the memories are always precious!
It’s crazy..are we really the only PB&J lovers? It is a classic we all grow up with, and still a household staple for anything athletic! Too funny! π
It’s good to be back…..I missed you all! π
Love the photos! Especially that PB&J! Whew, girl! Mighty fine. I always, always pack tons of food. Biggest fear is to be sans snackies on the road. And oh so true about appreciating the driver. It’s a tough job and they need the lurv. Welcome home! Looks like an enchanting place to spend time with friends.
Thanks Anne!! It was a great few days and it’s great to be home!…I did take my computer (thinking maaaaaybe I’d get a little down time) but with 17 people packed into the house my only quiet time was running on the hilly roads π !! The snacks make the trips, don’t they?! Too true!! Hope you had a great weekend!
Loving your post and photos! Have Food Will Travel – ha! Have a Great Day:)
Thanks Renee! Got to have the healthy snacks right?! You too! :)xo!
I do like a good road trip too.. jujubes, yeah! We always have coffee in the car and are kinda unhealthy (my excuse to get fries) but water is must. Love the pretty market flowers! Welcome back! Long weekend in the US coming up π
Coffee for sure!! Always coffee! I have on many occasions resisted the urge for a doughnut over the years…(it’s really best as they do not agree with me!) … but always coffee and water to keep us going! Have a great long weekend! Any plans?
yep, doughnuts (donuts!) are hit or miss for me.. I’d prefer not too though but twist my arm! I was actually reminded of Memorial Day weekend yesterday (?) so no plans for travel as my husband is working but I’m sure I’ll find something to do in NY! Gotta check Time Out magazine π
I love long weekends at home too! Sounds very lovely!! Lucky girl! Yeah, me and doughnuts are not good friends…though they are dreadfully tasty aren’t they?! π
i’m glad you had a great trip! i love road trips — time to reflect, and good conversations. I always bring homemade zucchini chips, water, and nuts! That and a fully charged phone and iPod! Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful suggestions!! I love the zucchini chip idea…and nuts are a must too…along with the ipod and phone – YES! Thanks for stopping by! I’ve got to stop in to visit your blog! xo! Thanks for the follow!
Ok, Shira, now you’re making me want to take a road trip!!! haha I love the idea of zucchini chips π
Me too! We need a zucchini chip recipe! I hope you get to go on one this summer! π xo!
Hey Shira! sounds like you had great fun on your road trip. I’m not a huge fan of being cooped up in the car, but i will endure it. I think it’s just cuz I get really fidgety. My best tip is music! Bring a selection that everyone will enjoy and make sure you have some upbeat songs to perk you up when feeling tired.
I love your tip about honouring the driver…so important π
I get a little fidgety too! That is, until I fall asleep from all the singing to the fave tunes! π Awesome (and crucial) tip Sarah!! I always say a little thank you to any driver…be it a pilot, car driver, bus driver, or even just myself π So important! xo!
Amazing trip. I get a little antsy when I am in the car for too long, so the frequent pee breaks are always welcomed for me (not always for my driver though.) I bring similar snacks..PB&J is a must, and apples and oranges are my go to fruits. I also like nuts, and chocolate.
I love your thoughts about thanking the driver. This is something I will be sure to practice from here on out.
Awesome Britt, and thanks! Gratitude works in so many areas…and without safe and focused drivers we’d be hooped! Love your snacks – we share in that! And how could I have forgotten to mention chocolate?! π Of course!!
Being an Aussie girl I can happily say road trips are the bomb – eating chips, listening to music, enjoying the scenery and talking to the driver all at once π
Welcome back my friend!
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
Thanks Uru! it is good to be back!! Love your road trip style….especially the talking part..I drive my driving hubby crazy!! π
I definitely agree on the breakfast point! make sure u eat something u LIKE for breakfast. go satisfied on the road trip otherwise you will keep snacking or moaning π lovely photos and cant wait for the green smoothie recipe!
Thanks Alexia! Yes….breakfast is so key and keeps the temptations at bay (unless folks look forward to those times – which is not me!!) – have a fab day! xo!
I love road trips… and I am a little bit ashamed to say that my road trip food is often less than healthy! I might have to take a leaf out of your book, as your snacks look delicious & healthy!
Oh Tara!…I know more than a few folks who look forward to ‘treats’ on road trips – whatever makes them special, right?! Maybe the carrots and peas could just off set the other travel treats! It’s all about having fun after all! π Have a great day!!
Lovely photos! I enjoy road trips, but mostly if I am the driver! I’m more relaxed π
Great point about the driving, it can be totally relaxing, awesome point! So long as you are getting the passenger side love! π Thanks Villy!!
YES!! Taking healthy snacks is KEY to a successful road trip without tantrums (mine). hehe. Roadhouse food is the WORST. Blergh. Bring on the smoothie recipe! π
Totally agree!! Nobody needs a road tantrum, and if yours are anything like mine π I totally hear you my friend!! Healthy is best or I get pretty crabby π Smoothie coming right up!
love road trips! and love the tips! and the photos! and did i mention you, too? hope you have a great day!
Oh Madison – you are just too too adorable!! So many wonderful things to love, and the feeling is mutual! You have a fab day too my friend! π
Shira, you’re speaking my language here (as you so often do!) I adore road trips – hands down my very favorite way to travel (though canoeing comes in a close second.) So happy hearing your perspective on the open road and your fellow riders!! π As for food – always packing freshly made granola…drop into a market along the way for yogurt…or just eat by the bowl or handful. Dried fruits and nuts. Home-made cookies. Goat cheese & veggies. Good bread. And a blanket – always a blanket to spread. As for loving the driver – I so agree! Though I love driving myself, we’re usually in my hub’s car and he’s behind the wheel. I’ll spread a napkin on his lap, open and prepare any food coming his way in the easiest to eat form – or I’ll hand feed him on occasion – but only things like grapes. π And thanks and sweet touches are always in order. Thanks for a lovely post – happy knowing you enjoyed your first trip of summer! xo
Wow Spree – thanks! I love your comments here…and your delicious snack suggestions just made me rather peckish π
I too have been known to love canoe rides and feeding my husband on occasion…and a giant *thumbs up* on the blanket!! I’ve always got one too! I love that we share these similarities! π
Sounds so much fun, Shira! I’ve never done a proper road trip, but I probably will. I can’t even drive, not even had a lesson π¦
No driving? Sounds heavenly! π I wouldn’t mind that actually…!
I’ll get round to it eventually, but don’t need to right now. It is rather heavenly and far cheaper than otherwise π
Totally agree with you π Enjoy! More $$ for other important things!
I look forward to the days of road trips when the littles aren’t constantly asking “how much further?”. The pic with the snap peas made my mouth water – can’t wait for the peas to come out of the garden!
Yum fresh garden peas are my favorite!! The only thing that keeps my little one quiet is the veggies π But sadly, they don’t last the whole trip!!
“Honor the driver”–excellent policy! Your on-the-road snacks look healthy and superb. I usually pack nuts and water and then get excited for a new, or favorite, restaurant at our destination!
Thanks Jennifer! Destination hunting is so fun – I totally love this! It’s great in a cool city or area with great little towns…we get out of Vancouver here and it can be a little dicey so that can be very risky – we always err (just a little) on the safe side out of necessity!! π
Sounds like a very wise plan. I think we’re luckier in California, unless you’re headed east. Barstow is scary. Very scary. Next time I’m headed to Arizona, I’ll stop in Palm Springs or pack some yummy snacks! π
What a lovely sounding trip! I feel so silly now for asking you about it- turns out if I had just caught up on my blog reading I would have found this lovely post! Silly me π
I absolutely love road trips, especially ones that don’t have a specific time of arrival. I love stopping at whatever catches your eye along the way, taking breaks, blasting the music and taking detours! And of course, road trip snacks are always fun! I love rice crackers with peanut butter and trail mix!
Glad you had such a wonderful vacation! You seem refreshed and recharged which is awesome! Happy you’re back π
Thanks Gabby! Loving those snacks – awesome! It is great to be back and re-charged – that’s the great thing about these long weekends! xox! Loving your blog these days btw!

I was so pleased to see your beautiful post featured as well – I was going to stop in but you beat me to it! Congratulations to you as well my friend!
Your home country?! Amazing!! Will you blog from there too? I hope so! I hope you have a wonderful time and I wish you blessings and safe travels! xo! π
Good morning!
Couldn’t help giggling at the bit about covering all bases – the first thing out of the bag being loo roll. How like a Mum!
Love road trips, but the only problem we have with taking snacks (make that mountains of snacks) along is the boys have eaten everything before we’ve even left the village!
Ha! Too funny! Actually those peas and carrots were gone before the first pit stop so I know exactly what you mean! Thanks for stopping in – and welcome! π
Very cute and meaningful post. I like the idea and the way you transfer the message. Being crazy over traveling, this is absolutely the post of the month. Excellent, Shira π
Thanks! So happy you enjoyed it! Best wishes for a great summer of travel and road tripping! Thank you for the re-blog! π
Reblogged this on thduong and commented:

Love this post and love your blog; therefore I have nominated you for a One Lovely Blog Award. Do with it what you will. π Thanks for the meaningful and beautiful posts!
Thanks Rachel! I love your blog too! Thanks for the Lovely Blog nomination, and congrats to you….just about to lock down my CSA! π xo! Have a great night!
You have such a lovely blog here, thanks for sharing. I’ve been on the road, travelling through Europe, for more than 5 months now and am always thinking about what fresh market produce or local delight I can slip in my backpack for a snack. At the moment I’m in Spain walking el Camino de Santiago and have been enjoying the spanish tortilla for breakfast, carrots, boiled eggs and nuts for lunch and a little pintxos for dinner. Yum.
Spain (and those lovely snacks) sounds amazing! 5 months is a long time to on the go and so healthy is a must..and I’m with you on the fresh market produce!! They are hands down my faves! Thanks for your comment and kind words – so happy to have you! π
